Default Help me settle this argument!

In your opinion, which rifle is better [in terms of overall bang for your buck]?

It's between a DPMS Sweet 16 and a Stag 3T-M.

Thanks in advance!

I vote for the Stag. It's a 3-gun competition gun. The DPMS is a bull barrel varmint gun but with a short barrel. It seems to be confused as to what it is.

I agree. He insists, though, that the 20-inch barrel on it allows for great long-range accurac.

Just fight until one of you falls down and grab a pint.

To me, the Stag is a purpose built 3-gun competition gun. It's a tool for that. The DPMS is a hunting gun. Nobody 'runs and guns' with a bull barrel. These guns aren't built with the same purpose in mind. You want to bench shoot from a fixed position all day at paper targets? Or shoot rat dogs with a scope? Great, get the DPMS but with a 20-inch barrel. You want to run around and engage targets up close then far away, the Stag is built for that.

Stag! Never been impressed with DPMS. Stag puts some nice sight and furniture on. I have the Diamond Head sights and rail and love them. It comes with the rifle. DPMS doesn't give you the nicer add ons like Stag.

No one hunts with a bull barrel either. I do not know if you have tried to shoot a dedicated target rifle unsupported. I can tell you right now it is not easy. I have no idea how out of balance an AR15 with a bull barrel would be. I only know a couple people who even own an AR. There might be a couple other closet AR15 fans I know. But they would never admit owning an AR15. How can you look cool when everyone is making jokes about your peashooter?

People who go on prairie dog hunts, do so with bull barrels and often use a portable bench to shoot from. A different style of hunting, to be sure.

I used to think that barrel length was a major factor in accuracy and it is a factor but more important is the ratio of barrel thickness to length. A long skinny barrel is going to be less accurate than a shorter fat barrel.

*This is assuming everything else is equal and we are talking about common barrel lengths, I'm not suggesting a 2" barrel is going to be more accurate than a 20" barrel.
