I have the standard carbine barrel with front post sight.

Not bad at all! I love the balance on my burnt bronze build with the 10 1/4". It's about perfect.

How would you go about attaching a vfg to it? Rail sections I assume, I'm not a fan of them but he wants one.

Yes. They make short rail sections.
