I have a 300 Vortex Viper, and a Nikon Buckmaster that I got on sale for under 110 dollars. Both 3x9x40's and the Nikon is much brighter, and I like the hollow Nikon BDA reticle points better than the solid filled Vortex BDA points. If I could do it all over, I'd have saved 200 and gotten a second Nikon, and not the Viper.

Don't fret it too much. You can always upgrade later (That's when you learn more and find better prices )

This purchase can always be moved to your next new gun.

Anna's choices are great.

Midway has some really decent pricing on Nikons right now.

Thats what I do, when I get a new scope, I put it on the gun that is needing one most to fill a certain requirement, and then take the existing one on that gun, and work its way down to my 22 rifle.

Back in the day a Savage 250-3000 and a Redfield Peep served them well.

I'm also on the hunt for a new scope. I've got my mind dead seat on a p-223. Nikon makes great scopes and If I was you I would go with the p-223, that's what I'm going with.
