Ok you should be good then. Next question what mos/rating are you going in as? That could also help determine whether you should get an m16 type ar or an m4 style to familiarize with

Ok cool an mp I would say go m4 type but keep it simple the only mps I saw with a whole bunch of stuff on the m4 were srt team guys yeah Psa is probably best value for the price but your duty weapon I'd the m9 most of the time if you were going active duty usually only the patrol supervisor had an m4 in the car unless that patrolman was srt too most likely only time you will have one is basic/ait, range day at drill and if you get activated

AR 15 rifles are a dime a dozen. I would look for a $700 rifle and at least $300 worth of ammo while prices are fair on 5.56 x 45 ammo.

Perhaps he means "beef up" as in upgrading

If that's the case, then he is wrong.

I also don't know what you're talking about - new Colt ... The defunct 6900?
And why CMMG when there are better choices at $900?

The biggest issue with assembling an AR isn't so much getting the parts together right - it's getting the right parts together. You'll remember the quality of a gun long after you forget how much you paid for it.

There are a number of varying and mostly good suggestions here, many with different benefits. You can benefit greatly (knowledge, understanding, experience) from building your own rifle. You can also benefit greatly from keeping it cheap and leaving plenty of room to purchase ammo and get a ton of reps. Repetition and positive habits are critical. You don't necessarily need them, but it's a great opportunity to get ahead of the curve.

That's why I suggest the previously mentioned PSA kit. Whadda ya know, I think 'my' idea is great. But it's a really good milspec rifle...worthy of upgrades, built to last, you gain the building experience, and it still fits with the 'buy cheap, spend on ammo' strategy.

I'm not saying it's ideal for everyone, but it's what I'd choose based on my own experience and knowledge of the AR market. And I think it might treat you really well.
