There are a number of varying and mostly good suggestions here, many with different benefits. You can benefit greatly (knowledge, understanding, experience) from building your own rifle. You can also benefit greatly from keeping it cheap and leaving plenty of room to purchase ammo and get a ton of reps. Repetition and positive habits are critical. You don't necessarily need
them, but it's a great opportunity to get ahead of the curve.
That's why I suggest the previously mentioned PSA kit. Whadda ya know, I think 'my' idea is great. But it's a really good milspec rifle...worthy of upgrades, built to last, you gain the building experience, and it still fits with the 'buy cheap, spend on ammo' strategy.
I'm not saying it's ideal for everyone, but it's what I'd choose based on my own experience and knowledge of the AR market. And I think it might treat you really well.
