If that is the case then you can also look at building a lower yourself and getting an upper to put on it. You will learn how it all works as you put it together. It is pretty simple to build.

umm I would hold off then honestly and learn to shoot one in basic because you might pick up bad habits learning on your own and then if your not a first time go at brm day it's no visit to the gut truck(snack vendor) for you

If you want to build (it's easy and enlightening, especially with the help of YouTube; and will require about an hour of your time), this is the ticket:

PSA 16" CHF middy rifle kit: $509.99

Add $150-200 for a stripped lower + rear sight, and you're in business. Why is this better than the $750 complete rifle you can buy elsewhere? It's almost certainly got a far superior BCG and great barrel (the two most critical parts), midlength gas, and a milspec platform that is more worthy of investing upgrades into, IMO.

I figure if OP wants practice for basic, a colt will probably be the closest since he'll either have a colt or an FN.

Are you going guard/reserve or active duty that will also figure into it if your active duty and living in the barracks you cannot keep a weapon in your room
