Good detective work Chris and a fun day to boot! I also don't know why the primers in those 5 rounds weren't struck sharply but since it only happened with UMC the ammo has to be a prime suspect. It sure seems like the rounds didn't chamber properly. Do they chamber properly if you manually test them (remove the lower and carefully drop them in the chamber). You're not the first one to have complaints with UMC, lots of people hate it. I've never tested it myself and probably won't.

As far as hitting high at 100 yards, I can tell you that is normal. If you zero at the standard military 25/300 meters the imact at 100 meters is about 7" high. The bullet actually rises until it gets to about 125-150 meters depending on intial zeroing range. It follows an arc much like a 50 yard football spiral pass. Since the sights are about 2.5" higher than the bore, you aim the bore up a little, enough for the bullet to counter gravity and rise then fall in an arc.

Just cleaned it. It took, like, an hour. But I really wanted to go through everything since I really put it through its paces.

How many times cleaning it does it take until I get faster. That was a pain in the rear.

It was sure cool knowing how everything worked and went together so I was able to put it back together without any difficulties. BUILD IT YOURSELF!

It just takes a certain amount of time to Hoppe's everything, brush everything, blow off everything, oil everything, put it all back together. (Well not everything, obviously)

Hey Chris I was looking at cheap RDS and saw this NcSTAR:

Amazon.com: NcSTAR® Red Dot Reflex Sight with 4 Different Reticles: Sports & Outdoors

It looks much like your design but is more compact at only 3 1/4" long so should fit properly with your BUIS. Under $30 shipped and lots of good reviews (considering the price). I'm thinking of getting one to play with and if it doesn't work out put it on my Colt/Walther M4 .22LR

fsted,

This is a build thread. There are quite a few threads that deal with the piston vs. direct impingement. Thanks for your input and I'd love to read your thoughts as you join in on one of those threads.

Chris - I have moved those posts to their own thread where the discussion can continue without adding off topic discussion to this one.

Chris, I stuck my brushes in a cordless drill last night, and I've never gotten my AR so clean so fast. It came in really handy for the hard to scrub recesses of the bolt and carrier, and is the only effective method I've found for getting my barrel extension clean. Give that a try.

You think the brushes would fit in my Dremel tool? I hear those are really good for polishing feed ramps.

NOT

DefaultQuestion...

I couldn't think of another thread to put this question on so I might as well put it in this sticky since this is the rifle in question:

I just bought a DPMS pin kit and a couple spring kits from MidwayUSA as back-ups. Overnight I had a dream that my buffer pin broke. That's the one in the threads of the lower that keeps the buffer from being shot out by the buffer spring.

It was NOT part of the pin kit. Should I have one on hand? It seems pretty necessary. The spring kit doesn't have a buffer pin spring, either.

Thoughts?
