[QUOTE=CHLChris;500975]I have been feeling a little light in the rifle department and was beginning to think I should get a rifle with a larger round.

You can also get a dedicated upper for an AK round, or just change the barrel and bolt. Just a thought.

And if you stick around to watch the late run of Glenn Beck's show, you'll remember why you decided to build it.

All the function checks are a go. I just need to get to a range that actually goes out to more than 25 yards. I think I'm off to my father-in-law's in a couple weeks so we'll go to his range and test out my new RKBA Protector.

A range report shall follow then.
Sorry I am so late, but I like this build. Elegant.

Default CHLChris AR-15 build v1.5 complete

I decided I wanted a sling on my AR because of my stated purpose for this rifle: SHTF go-to rifle. I need my hands free and this wouldn't be simply seeing range time.

First AR-15 Build...here I go! - AR-15 Discussion

I decided to go with these parts:

Magpul MOE handguard, black, midlength $34

Into that handguard I installed an Impact Weapons QD Micro-Slot, $16

2 MOE picatinny rails, $8 each

First AR-15 Build...here I go! - AR-15 Discussion

To the rails I attached this Flashlight Mount, $20, and a Magpul AFG2 foreend grip, black, $34.

The other end of the sling attaches into a Daniel Defense QD end plate, $37.

The sling I decided to go with was the Blue Force Vickers VCAS padded sling, black, $65. I had to add a couple of VLTOR QD sling swivels, $24.

I think I got everything shipped for $248.

Y'all might notice the new Nikon M-223 1-4x scope with Point Blank reticle for 50-200 yard range. I got that with a free mount on a promotion for $265.

I think we're up to about $1400 in this rifle.

Oh, I forgot a cool detail. I didn't want to pay $20 for a handguard removal tool. So I started looking around my garage for some spare stuff. I found a copper plumbing pipe, a few little hardware thingies, and some electrical tape. I had to grind down the part that acts as fulcrum in the mag well, so it was narrow enough to fit. I think that was an electrician part, for mounting conduit to a wall.

I came up with this:

It worked perfectly! I'm not sure I'll ever use it again, but it saved me $20!

A lot of the ideas were yours, especially that Impact Weapons Mount-n-Slot. The install was pretty easy and it works GREAT! Thanks for your help!

Hey I told you about the IWC Mount-N-Slot too Chris, over a month ago.

'Course no one ever listens to me...

Great minds thought alike. You two were both playing off each other on that sling thread. I would have never even known about QD without both of your suggestions.

Thanks, Quentin!
