Default Finally time for a black rifle...

I've always thought of the 7.62x39mm round as a great multi-purpose cartridge.....30 caliber bullet, low recoil, PRICE, etc. But now I am in the market for a battle-quality black rifle. The last time I shot my friends S&W m&p 15, I was shocked that such a small caliber bullet would have that much recoil, not to mention the GIGANTIC size of the whole cartridge. Is there any good AR type rifles that utilize the 7.62x39? And which ones (out of the box) are the best for a inexpensive budget...or should I look for something in the popular .223 or .308? Please help school a guy...thanks!

I'd go 5.56 or .308 or just buy an ak if you really like the 7.63x39.

For my money you are getting a sub-par round in a platform designed for accuracy.

Inside 300 yards the 7.62 x 39 is deadly. Beyond that it has the ballistics of a flying aircraft carrier.

The AR platform in it's DI configuration is designed to be a more accurate rifle system than Uncle Mihkail's piston driven eastern bloc offering.

So with a 7.62 x 39mm AR-15 you are paying for accuracy that you aren't getting. In my mind anyways.

Now if you got an AK, it would be a lot cheaper and you would have the heavier short range bullet option.

If you want to take advantage of the AR platform, I would look at a wildcat like the 6.5 Grendel or something like that where you can still pack a whallop, but get distance out of the round as well.

Just my $0.02 - YMMV

Q,

I am with JD! In my opinion he is right on, unless you just want to sling cheap lead! The AR platform is very versatile and has much better rounds ballistically to choose from. I have a 6.5 Grendel in an 18" Comp/Varmint Model and it is fantastic. But you should plan on loading your own. We have data available for you on that. Otherwise 5.56, 6.8 SPC and other calibers are better choices when it comes to accuracy and performance.

I concur with the above posts. Why spend the money if you are set on the 7.62x39? The AK is a fine rifle for what it is designed for.

And as stated the 6.5 Grendel is a hard hitting round that has legs. If you are ok with the 5.56 or 6.8 SPC rounds, here is a link for uppers with everything but the BCG and charging handle at some damn good prices for Labor Day.

Ar in 7.62x39 has issues. If you want an AR get a 5.56 or .223 Wylde.

If you really want a 30 cal get a 7.62x35 300 blackout.

And a reloader. 1 in 10 gunshops maybe have .300 blk, 6.8 spc, etc. Less than that for 6.5 Grendel.
