Favorite ammo for your AR-15?

So I just purchased my first AR at Midwest Industries (a BCM) and I'm just missing one important piece of my home defense/target practice puzzle - some ammunition to shoot.

Any recommendations on certain types of ammo to look for or avoid? Any good deals going on right now that I could take advantage of?

Thanks!

98.

A lot depends upon the barrel twist of your rifle! Please advise us of the barrel twist! If it is anywhere from 1:12 to 1:8 for extreme accuracy I use Federal P-223 E Ammunition. As far as just shooting ammunition there are many good ammunition manufacturers. And anything but the ammunition that has the varnish on it for example the older Wolf ammunition which is a NO NO! is fine for plinking and target. But to answer your question more effectively we need to know the barrel twist!:)

I buy plinking ammo in 5.56 online and in bulk, like M193 and M855 (55 & 62 grain) and can get the price below $.30/round.

Out of my RRA however, at 100 yards I get 2 1/2" groups using the cheap stuff, whereas good, factory stuff (Hornady V-max, for example) comes in at 1 MOA.

I make my own plinking ammo. Currently using ss109's from upammo. I think im at about .18 cents a round atm.

But a bcm should shoot anything you stuff in the mag thats the right chambering.

I like to avoid factory ammo unless i need some brass for reloading.

I don't have an AR but I have a few hundred rounds of these and some I'm not gonna mention.

I normally shoot Wolf to practice with (unless I can get a cheaper price on something else), then break down and buy Remington for any competitive shooting. My AR's will shoot it all with no problem. From what I read from the people who have been on the forum for a while, BCM will eat about any ammo you feed it with no problem. Your choice of AR's should serve you well. Just make sure you get a quality lube for your BCG.

I mostly buy Federal or PMC for range/bulk stock. Neither has failed me. If you're a cheapo, don't mind non-brass, and your gun will cycle it, I've been really impressed with the performance of Silver Bear 223 62gr softpoints. They're plenty accurate, potent, and fast. That could be an excellent range, target, or defense round, but it will not cycle well in every gun.

As far as premium target and defense rounds, I really like Hornady. Your BCM should be a 1:7, so you'd be best served with 60+gr rounds for the tasks you're willing to open the wallet for.
