I've heard this rumor about the M4 and M16: If you place the bolt carrier group bolt-down on a table and the weight of bolt carrier group is able to push the bolt into the locked position, the extractor spring needs to be replaced.

No, not true. a well lubricated and slightly worn M16 will do that, yet be in perfect operating condition. The extractor spring has nothing to do with it.
