Default Eating my words

I can't find the thread about AR's and lowers but i was tlking about iron sights not needed below 300 yards.
I was sitting on the porch enjoying the sun. It is about 140 yards or a little less to end of driveway. nieghbor's fence post start at about 210 yards. I don't hink I would shoot at a deer with iron sights now, in good light, beyond 260 yards with a good hold and rifle sighted in at 250 yards. Hard to believe time has caught up with me but it appears so.
Time was I could shoot a rabbit at that 250 to 26 yards after years of shooting but I would be doing good to see it now. Out west 300 yards ppears as just a stone throw away. Shooting something like a buffalo at 400 yards with practice and faamiliar rifle would not bee too much trouble for young guys.
Better get out there and practice and enjoy youth it all goes before you know it.

I can still manage a peep sight out to 100 yards but I need magnification for smaller targets or longer distance.

Months ago, I bought, and mounted, a nice Williams peep sight for my Marlin .30-30, 2 weeks ago I put a 4X scope on it. I can't see well enough out beyond 100 yards to rely on the peep for accuracy.:dangitman:

Iron sights not needed below 300 yards? Is that what you meant to write?

He's what you'd call an instinct shooter.

Yeah coolio... Reminds me of locker room bull****. I can't bench press 500 like I used to... It's just 400 on a good day... Guess I am not a kid anymore...

Ahemmmm!!... With all due respect. Gentlemen.

I can still lift 500 pounds, I just can't carry it as far as I used to.

Distance shooting with Iron sights has been going on for years. I'm lucky my eyes have held out. I talked to my eye doctor about it this past year. She explained that with most people the eye looses its' ability to focus on different planes. With me I have worn glasses for distance since I was 7. My issue now is small text up close with my glasses on. If you want to see what a 300 yard shot with open sights is like on a 1 gallon milk jug, use a .22 with open sights and a NRA small bore 50ft target. The bullet is the same size as the 10 bull. It is a serious challenge to put 5 bullets through the same hole, 5 times as there are 5 bulls. I shoot my M38 Swede and K31 Swiss out to 300 yards open sight at a 12" target with Surplus ammo on a pretty regular basis. Ammo is as important as the rifle. For distance with a 91/30 7.62x54r M30(J) (180gr) yugo heavy ball. M98 or M24/47 7.92x57 sS (198gr) heavy ball. I love irons at distance.
