Yes there are at least three versions of the AR-10 or .308 AR.

#1) ArmaLite, Eagle Arms (ArmaLite low cost line), Noveske, and Aeroprecision are compatible and use a magazine based on the M14. This happened because when ArmaLite designed the AR-10B in the 1990s they modified M14 magazines which were plentiful, then later designed a really good magazine that was backwards compatible with all their AR-10Bs.

#2) KAC, DPMS, Remington, and LMT use a magazine more like the original AR-10 of the 1950s.). I am not sure if LaRue and the old Bushmaster design fall in this group or are another group. (Bushmaster discontinued their old 308 AR but may release a current DPMS style since they're now under the same ownership.) No doubt there are others too.

#3) RRA which uses FAL magazines

The second group is more popular mainly because DPMS is pretty cheap and works. Many people say the new ArmaLite magazines are better than what the second group uses but that may be because the first DPMS magazines were terrible. Since KAC is in this group I doubt their magazines have any problems. DPMS is probably a decent low cost choice then.

A shame the 308 ARs aren't all compatible, it causes confusing and no doubt helps keep the price high.

BTW, I have VHS and Beta - and Blu-ray and HD DVD!

RRA - FAL magazines? Strange. I don't think that they'll ship to CA and they
personally told me they can't give a warranty on their lowers to CA.

DPMS style, does have it's own mags? When i got to look for mags, what
am I looking for? I didn't even see choosing the correct mags as a
foreseeable issue.

Yeah, no matter which brand you buy make sure you get the right magazines. Compatibility wise AR-10 variants are a pain compared the AR-15 where almost anything goes. DPMS does have their own line of magazines, they may be called DPMS/KAC since those are the two major names that use that kind.

As far as RRA, I've just read they use FAL compatible magazines. Never tried it since I've never handled the RRA. Maybe someone else can verify. Again, a pain!

I honestly don't have a lot of experience with building these variants yet.

I have been out of the shop for awhile and even when I stop by there have been, MAYBE, one or two that were even on the books because while people are interested, the platform is still so new that folks with the coin just order a complete unit.

I suppose I probably need to build one, as it's the obvious next evolution of the platform.

I can provide some help and useful insight, but I can't say I have hands on experience with all three options at this time.

Sweet, now is as good a time as any!

Ok, i'm drafting an email to my law-enforcement arms dealer who said he
was excited to build one and hasn't built an AR-10 before but has made
dozens and dozens of AR-15s.

Hey Guy,

It’s time to start the AR-10 build. More specifically, we are going to build
a DPMS M110 style SASS rifle.

Before we order the lower, I need to make sure there is a good upper
match.

We want it to be a SASS spec as possible.
- Should have a rotating bolt
- Standard gas block (no gas piston)
- Upper & Lower can be billet or forged (just need to be a tight fit)
- Barrel, not shorter than 18” or longer than 22”
- Large Muzzle break (I’ve seen one that looks like end of a howitzer)
- Free-floating barrel
- Needs to shoot 7.62 x 51 & .308

I don’t have any particular brand in mind, just can’t be an Armalight style, it must be DPMS.
And should easily be under $1,500 w/o a scope.

We are still looking over the furniture, will get back to you on that.

This is one example: Online Store DPMS: AR-15 Rifles, Parts and Accessories.
This is the Wikipedia info on it: M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What should I add to this?

AR-10A4 CARBINE 7.62 CHR BLACK W/FORWARD ASSIST; NATIONAL MATCH TRIGGER; 1913 HAND-GUARD

Later I would save for a couple of yrs and get this one (again drool falling in the keyboard what a mess!!)

I talked with my dealer today and we went over a few things together.
After the talk i realized, there aren't that many companies making what i'm looking for.

Here is some quick searching... I'll be getting more links together tomorrow

$3,300 - Ripoff!
.308 Modular Weapon System, 16" Stainless Steel Flat Matte - Firearms

$8,000 - HOLY HELL!
M110 SASS, XM110 SASS, Semi-Automatic Sniper System, Army M110

$1800 - Awesome - in price range
https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/61642
But is it a pile of bolts? my dealer tellse me I don't want DPMS brand.

$1400 - Even better price range
https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/61628

$1500 - in pirce range
Bushmaster - Hunting Models

$3,800 - too much
JP Enterprises MR-10 Custom Tactical Rifle MR-10, 308 Win/.300 WSM/6.5 Creedmoor, Bolt-Action, Optional BBL, Black Telfon Finish, 30 Rd

$1,100 - Great, but would have to change nearly all of the furniture
Centerfire Rifle - Model R-15 - Remington Centerfire Rifles

I always look at the Armalite 'cause they invented the AR platform, in fact AR stands for Armalite Rifle, and I recall reading somewhere that the original AR was the AR10 since it was the 10th version of the rifle, then the AR 15 came as a scaled down version of the AR10 and Armalite sold licenses to Colt, then Colt pushed until they got the US military contract, if not mistaken the first one was with the Airforce to test the AR, maybe someone can clarify if this information is accurate or not.

If Armalite invented the Rifle then they should know what they're doing.

my $0.02
