What exactly is a "dissipator" and what are it's advantages/shortcomings as opposed to a regular carbine? Thanks.

In the actual function of the rifle there is no advantage since the (Bushmaster version at least) standard carbine gas system is retained. But for the shooter the rifle length handguards give you more surface to grip, a longer sight radius and many people love the look.

A better choice for many people is the midlength upper.

can someone elaborate a little bit on this subject as i am debating a dissipator build. i want a 16in barrel and i love the way the dissy looks. thanks!

There's really not much more to say than above. If you like rifle length handguards on a carbine and want the carbine length gas system then it's for you.

I only know of the Bushmaster but maybe someone else is up to speed on competitor's designs. For a build I have no idea what barrel and FSB you should choose.

p.s. my neighbors rifle is a dissy, a DPMS , with ''rifle'' gas, we've shot that thing for years, thousands of rounds, zero problem's.
one of the best AR's i've ever fired, i fell in love with it. had to have my own.
im sold on rifle and middy gas. the rifle gas shoots so nice n' soft.

yeah, everyone should have one.
