An 8620 is not going into a go-to build for me anytime soon. But I bought a couple in their BCG/CH package for $170. Ideal...it is not. But adequate quality and fairly priced? Yes. It'll be a good BCG that lasts a long, long time in a midlength gun IMO. Also a nice option to keep as a spare.

Not the ideal choice for your soul option/go-to gun, especially if enduring the extra wear of a carbine length gas system. Understand your options. Research how various aspects of your build (gas system) impact others (BCG wear). Were I trying to build a sub-$1K type ML AR, I would say this BCG is a perfectly viable option. But if you've got a CL rifle or intend to spend a bit more on the build, spring for the PSA/BCM C158.

Just my two cents. Each consumer's budgets and expectations will lead them in their own direction...but please folks, do enough research to know that you made an informed decision based on your own needs/budget.

Looks like the ammo craze may be calming down. Ammunition prices have drastically dropped this past week. There are several sites now selling brass fro 43 cents a round. Slickguns.com has some from 3 different vendors right now.

So until then, STOP BUYING AMMO.

Were the 8620 bolts marked MPI? I've heard they are.

Not a fan but as you said it should work for light use. IIRC 8620 was milspec for bolts until the early 1980's when the military changed to Carpenter 158. So those old bolts did see a lot of use. It would be interesting to see DOD statistics on bolt life 8620 vs. C158.

The biggest issue with assembling an AR isn't so much getting the parts together right - it's getting the right parts together. You'll remember the quality of a gun long after you forget how much you paid for it.

I too would like to see that data.

Just wondering if DPMS is a good brand. I found audited a few in arms list for around $700. Seems like a great price for a 5.56/.223 AR. They're DPMS Oracle's

Cheap, entry level, lightweight, simple, etc. But a fine gun for $700.

I had a DPMS Sportical (nearly the same as Oracle). It was a great gun for me. I ditched all the rickity furniture for MOE and upgraded the BCG...so it was suddenly a $900 setup.

Most $600-900 ARs are pretty darned good guns in my experience. And if you spend any more than that, it's time to buy better names and get acquainted with all the specs.
