The M&P 15-22 was designed and built to be a 22lr. You can not change it. There are several calibers available in the AR 15 rifle platform. they go from .223 to .458 and possibly larger. It sounds like you might be interested in the 6.8 or 7.62 (300 Blackout) caliber size. In any case you will need a whole new platform.

Someone suggested the 6.5 Grendel. Any thoughts? Also any thoughts on a kit or complete upper and lowers?

The buttstock, and most of the FCG. Maybe the handguards. I think you should leave everything else with the .22LR. Seriously, you should get a separate AR if you want to shoot rifle rounds. Every .22LR AR I have seen is built exclusively for .22LR, however, you may be able to use the .22LR upper on an AR built for .223, if the mag will work.
