I bought a conversion kit for my AR-15. Let me tell you, it is a lot of fun. There is nothing like squeezing the trigger as fast as you can and annihilating a target from 25 yards. I've heard though that the accuracy is reduced with the conversion kit because the barrel is not rifled for a .22 shell. Is this correct?

Negative.

The .22lr round is not oversized, nor is it a "hard metal", so there is no wear and tear on your barrel.

I believe you have a 16" barrel from your other thread, which I assume is a GI, Chrome Lined, Standard AR barrel.

You could shoot .22lr out of that until the cows come home and not do any damage to that barrel.

That is good to know. I wasn't too worried about that. What I am curious about is the accuracy. I was told that the rifling in the barrel was meant for a .223 and not a .22 long rifle. So, the .22 just doesn't fly right.

I was at the range the other day, and one of my friends bought some .22 he bought from wal-mart. It was like I could shoot throught the same hole with the wal-mart gun from 25 yards. I was nowhere near as accurate using my Olympic AR-15 with the conversion kit.

The .22lr is .223"

The .223 and the 5.56 NATO is .224"

You aren't talking a real big difference there ( 1/1000th of an inch ). hence the reason so many companies are producing a .22 conversion kit for the AR. Nobody wants to be responsible for ruining someone's black rifle.

If it is a drop in bolt replacement, IMO the biggest problem I'd see is the long jump the bullet has to make from the case mouth through the smooth chamber adapter before it engages the rifling. Match 22's typically have the bullet touch or engrave the rifling upon chambering. The long freebore coupled with the typical 1in7-9 twist found in most modern ar's versus the 1in16 found in most 22lr might account for lacking accuracy.
Different brand of ammo might give you better accuracy but I wouldnt expect 1/4inch groups@25yard.

I have a Colt conversion for mine. I use to shoot at 100 yards at the same targets used on CMP. I never had a problem with accuracy. I had to raise the sights of course. The older it gets the more problems I have with misfires and jams. I’m lucky to shot 10 rounds now without a problem.
