Not knocking anyone's choices, but I'm curious nonetheless. With "common" ammo still hard to come by and getting or staying more expensive, how come so many people seem to want to go to odd calibers like 300BLK and 6.8? THAT stuff can't be any more available, or cheap. As it is, I'm having a hard time getting 500 .223 bullets.

+1 on the 7.62 x 39 suggestion.

Yeah I thought about 7.62x39 for me I would just buy an AK if that's the route I was goin.

but also with 6.8 gives me more reason to start reloading ammo which I haven't had a real good reason to do yet and have been very interested in doin so.

plus I enjoy shooting new things and the 6.8 has me intrigued enough to spend the extra $ heard a lot of good things about it.

300 is non existant in my lgs's along with 308.

but I can get 5.56/223 and 6.8 locally no problem plenty of it around here the 308 I have seen lately is more expensive then the 6.8 I've seen that has also influenced my decision a small amount.

I'm just buying an upper to swap in and out with my 5.56 upper not building a whole second rifle for the 6.8.

If you reload then why not load 300 blackout? You use same brass for it and .223, modified of course. I have not bought a single round of commercial ammunition for the one I built. For SHTF or CQB the 300 would be ideal. SHTF generally does not equal 400 + yard shots. I looked at the 6.8 but decided against it for reloading purposes. I already loaded .223 and .308 so the 300 was an easy choice.

That's just it I don't reload, I want to start, I'm just not a big fan of the 300 yet myself I'm not gonna use any suppressors which is where 300 really seems to stand out most aside from its compatibility with 5.56 cases, mags, and bolt.

This upper is gonna be used for greater distances mostly because I will have my 5.56 upper to swap them around when necessary.

but 6.8 close range (50-100yds) will do much better then 5.56 damage wise.

Getting off topic tho appreciate all the info and suggestions on calibers but I'm just looking for a good quality 6.8 upper.

Look at the ballistics, 7.62x39, 300 blk and 6.8 spc are all stacked on top of each other . When you say , if you wanted that caliber you would just buy a AK, take it from a owner of both the 7.62 AR Is more accurate than my AK .
These are 100 yard groups using cheap Tula 7.62 ammo to get me sighted in with , far more accurate than my AK
