Colt LE6940 Ammunition
My local gun guy brought this up and it started to worry me...he wasn't sure on the difference...so I figured if anyone would be able to explain it, it'd be you guys and gals
I just got my Colt LE6940 AR-15 and on the weapon its self it says to use 5.56 and in the manual it says I can use 5.56 or .223
Is there anything special I need to do to shoot .223?
Also, if they are two different sizes of rounds, then is it "bad" on my AR15 to shoot the .223? Since it's labeled as 5.56?

I believe that a 5.56 rifle can shoot .223, but a .223 rifle should not be shooting 5.56. Something to do with minuscule differences in case length, and the 5.56 having a higher chamber pressure.

Trip's right, go ahead and shoot 5.56 or .223 in your Colt!

What they said up there ^^^^
A 5.56 rifle can shoot either one. A .223 rifle should not shoot 5.56.
Exact opposite of the .308/ 7.62 NATO setup.

Am I the only one that thought it was odd the local gun guy didn't know?

Just remember point of impact will vary between 556 and 223

I could make a list of a bunch of guns i have, or "have", or wish I had. Why would one feel compelled to provide that infornation freely? Do you feel the need to show off? Is it some immature game of oneupsmanship?

Also, the Colt's have the "wylde" chamber right? (don't quote me on the spelling). I remember reading about that somewhere, it's specially designed to chamber either 5.56 or .223? Or maybe any 5.56 is like that and it's just advertising. Curious myself.

No, rifles marked 5.56 are not the Wylde chambering.
The .223 Wylde chamber was designed as a match chambering for semi-autos. It will handle both .223 Rem and 5.56mm NATO ammo. It is relieved in the case body to aid in extraction and has a shorter throat for improved accuracy.
