Actually, the en bloc clip of the Garand is loaded into the magazine. No exception.

So the magazine is built into the weapon and the clip is slid into the mag and when empty the clip ejects upward making the famous sound?

I was taught that if the rounds go into the holder, it's a magazine. With clips, you can usually see the rounds. Just a basic rule of thumb, I guess.
