Chrome-Moly Barrel?

Ballistically, what is the difference between a chrome-lined and chrome-moly barrel?

Dillinger 11-10-2009 04:47 PM

Chrome Molly is a type of steel. It's Chromium Molybdenum to be precise and it's what a lot of rifle parts are made out of.

Chrome lining a barrel, like an AR, is a process that is used to get more barrel life by adding a coating called metallic chromium.

They are not the same thing, or interchangable.

The benefits of a Chrome Lined barrel are that the barrel will last longer under heavy sustained fire. However they are not as accurate as a straight Chrome Moly barrel that is unlined.

Ballistically: You get more life out of a chrome lined barrel, you get better accuracy out of a non chrome lined barrel.

Chrome-molybdenum steel is harder than non chrome moly steel. This will result in better barrel life over a standard barrel, without the negative effects of traditional chrome lining.

Balistically, a chrome moly barrel will be more accurate than a chrome lined barrel, due to the inconsistencies found in the chrome plating. There will be only tiny differences between a carbon steel and chrome moly steel, due to differences in harmonics, with the advantage going to the chrome moly barrel.

I also agree. The most accurate barrels chrome moly and stainless steel.

Stainless is more accurate. Chrome Moly is more durable.
