Build your own AR

If I wanted to build my own, how many parts are there to put together? Upper, lower, what else? I own an AK but I know very little about the AR's and I though building my own could be kinda cool.

You can purchase a complete upper and a complete lower. Just two pins hold them together. Or you could build the entire rifle from parts. That is challenging but possible.

A pretty common way to do your own build is to buy a stripped lower receiver and then a complete parts kit (upper complete or otherwise and lower parts) Either way, I do recommend putting together your own lower receiver from a stripped receiver and a lower parts kit at least. This is where the parts most prone to issues reside and its a good idea to know how they work and how to replace them if necessary. Dozens of great walk-through videos on youtube. Its actually pretty fun too.

Typically in a standard lower build kit there is 34 parts counting the stock and grip . Its not hard to put together with basic tools, hammer, punches, screw driver . The upper is a bit different and uses some specialty tools and specific torque values , yet not that hard to build either just requires a few tools to do it properly

What kind of cost would I be looking at? High end, low end, basic model.

You could also build one from an 80% lower. It's a lower with everything but the trigger group milled out. It's unserialized, so I think you have to serialized it yourself to sell it.
It's a lot of work, but you can build your own gun.

If you diy an 80% lower it can never be sold traded or given away and has to be destroyed on event of your passing.

Op,

Costs vary according to quality of parts chosen

I think the law is different in every state on that......
