I wasn't a huge fan of the 5.56/.223 either, and while I originally wanted to start off going with an AR-10, I started with an AR-15 from olympic arms. Now I have an AR-10 as well, its an 18" bull barrel from DPMS, and while it is awesome to shoot, its also more than double the price of to shoot it over the AR-15. I enjoy shooting both, and while the Oly Arms won't reach out and touch something like the DPMS, they both have their place and are both fun to shoot. And to be honest, I've kind of warmed up to the 5.56 for plinking, and if I did any sort of varminting I'm sure I would like it for that as well.

Cane,I'm probably going to get a 458 upper in the near future if I can get a decent quanity of Starline Brass before I buy the upper. I just can't see paying what they want for finished ammo-I'm a cheap son of a gun!

I freaked out when I had to pay $53 for a bag of 25/06 brass at Cabelas the other day.Reloading's not cheap anymore!
My new Savage 110 FLP 25/06 should get here in about 6 weeks, and I'll have to break it in,then I'll put my mind on the 458 SOCOM.

I'm sure it will be fun shooting 45/70 slugs out of an AR.

Awesome post Cane, and welcome to the .458 club. I sent my RRA upper and bolt to Marty just after Thanksgiving. With the holidays and the freak weather TX is having, causing pipes to freeze, I should see my complete upper no later than April. Really looking forward to shooting this one.

Hey Cane,If you will notice all of them are out of stock on brass. That's what has stopped me from buying either the 458 SOCOM or the 50 Beowulf. If you can't get brass or bullets for them, all they are is expensive hammers cause all you can do with them is beat someone with the upper. LOL

Oh,Blue Star sells at the big Dallas gunshows and they are very pricey on all of their brass and bullets, yet there are plenty of people (Idiots) that shell out the cash for their stuff.
