I am also looking at the del-ton kit. Anyone have any input if the standard barrel has any better accuracy over the light barrel or is it all in the weight? I also heard that del-ton has a 15% off sale on their kits for black friday. If you do order from them they also give a military discount just log on to their site and then email them a copy of your DD214.

From what I understand the gas from the cartridge looses pressure the further it has to travel, so that added 2" makes the cycling softer. You will still have the same fouling but it wont be as hot, or hit your BCG as hard so I hear its easer on the gun. The gun was originally designed for a 20" barrel with a rifle length gas system and I think with a 16" the mid length works well, you can't get rifle length on a 16" barrel I think rifle length is at 16" or something like that, and the cycling probably wouldn't work.. So in theory the best route is the 20" rifle length, but I want a 16" more.

Whale noises pretty much nailed it on gas lengths. Rifle length came first and is ideal on 18"-20+" barrels. Carbine length came next and is ideal on around 11-14.5" and pistol length on shorter barrels. The midlength gas system is best around 14.5-16+" which is the lion's share of the market. As you can see there is overlap at 14.5" and some prefer carbine there, some midlength. Carbine length is hard on the rifle with a 16" barrel yet you often see it. (Lengths are for the barrel itself, not including a muzzle device.) Another advantage of longer gas system length is a longer sight radius. The trend now is midlength on 14.5-16" barrels.

Lotta guys from the Treasure Valley in this thread!

Edited to change ... 14.4 to 14.5

And yes Quentin I didn't even notice Whale was from Caldwell, are you an Idahoan yourself Quentin? Maybe there could possibly be a day of shooting mayhem in the near future with the 3 of us, or any other Idahoans on here as well

The boiseshooters.com forum is planning a shooting range outing on new years day, they suggested I go so I can try all their AR 15s and get a feel for the different barrel lengths and weights.

Sweet, just signed up on Boise Shooters, I had no idea they give discounts to members, that will definitely come in handy. I'm under the same name, ShirtRIPPA.

HDDVD as in "darn, chose the wrong format again!"

(Actually I knew what I was doing since at the time they were practically giving away HDDVD players and discs while 1st gen Blu-ray players were $400. BD finally came down so I now have and use both formats.)
