Default build options? advise

planning on my first ar build. wanted to build .308 ar-10 but found ar-15 parts to be more in my budget. my question is caliber, stay with .223, or go 6.8? 300 blk looks interesting too. anyone build using 7.62 x 39 i read someplace that this cartridge because of neck dosnt like ar style mags. any opinion or advise welcome. i shoot primarily at 200 yrd range . thanks

IMO, go with .223. I have been fighting myself to not go with the 6.8. I like the 6.8 but its more expensive and its not easy to find anywhere near me that stocks alot of it. Plus if shtf, .223 ammo and parts will be easier to find.

First AR? If so 5.56. 300 BLK is cool but would make a better 2nd AR due to higher priced ammo. 6.8 ammo is even higher than 300 BLK. 7.62x39 doesn't always agree w/ the dimensions of the AR like you mentioned. 223 cuts your ammo choice in half.

thanks for the info. 5.56 makes alot of sence. i'm not real conserned about ammo price as i'll be re-loading. ive been doing that for all my handguns for some time. will 6.8 be just as accurate less than 500 yrds? i know 5.56 is tried tested and proven, but i just like something with more punch!

If you're reloading 6.8 is a viable option. For me 6.8 doesn't make sense because I don't reload.
