I wasn't thinking about hunting. I was thinking more about self defense and would want to be prepared for the possibility that the bad guy(s) might have body armor. My logic is the bigger the bullet, the less rounds you have to use to take the bad guy down. But would the FMJ rounds be more likely to go through body armor?

Pete,

Bottom line for self defense. Almost any of the center fire rifle rounds will penetrate most all vests very easily unless the vests have plates in them.
So! 223/5.56, 7.62X39, 6.8 SPC and etc. would be a good choice if you are getting a rifle for that purpose. Any of the rounds in that class would do the same. So with that said, I do not probably believe you would ever contact someone with a vest pertaining to a self defense issues and around the house.

shoot...even the 5.7x28 is supposed to go through body armor a little bit better...and you can get that in a handgun or p90/m4 carbine style guns

so the hollow point rounds, although bigger, probably wouldn't go through body armor?

What is the obsession with getting through body armor? How many people do you know that actually own any?? Because I know of about (8) and they are all former military, so not guys I would be worried about having to fight against in a SHTF scenario.

The alternative is LEO and National Guardsmen, who are issued the stuff. Are you concerned about them??

Well I don't hang around many gang bangers. I have no idea how many of them wear body armor or if they would wear it if they decided to run up in my house.
