I can clear rooms all day w/ an AR then engage a distant target on the return trip to the FOB.

Don't forget he included weight, handling, and availability as well.
Lugging around an M14 40+ years ago I have to agree. It has advantages and is a fine battle rifle but times have changed, the AK-47 proved that so no wonder it's the most widely produced rifle today. But the M16/M4 has proven its worth and I was lucky to carry one for a short time in the service.

I think the key as MJ mentioned above is versatility and the M4 has that in spades, it does most things well and the 5.56mm caliber really isn't an issue most of the time. No wonder semiauto copies are so popular these days, there's no end to the way you can customize these things. It is the best.

The only things made by FN I've shot were the SAW and M16A4. Unless the M240 is also one of theirs, I think it is.

I think their QC is phenomenal.

We can argue ballistics and effectiveness all day long, and we'd be far from the first to do so.

I'll concede one thing to the 5.56, it DOES work. I just don't like how poorly I've seen it work. A man shouldn't still be fighting with 5 shots to the chest, and I've seen it regularly take at least 3-4 to put a man down. And I'm not talking about shots fired either, I'm talking about actual hits that our boys and girls have treated in field hospitals.

Wait one, I'd also give huge advantage points to the 5.56 in the weight department. That ammo is fairly easy to lug around.

I can't buy that.

5.56 works 99% of the time in my experience but you most remember the guys glaring back at us are often high on some sort of narcotic.

I've seen it effectively stop enemy combatants almost every time, I just don't like how many shots I've seen it take.

And for the drugs, the worst case I've seen was a man shot in the face 6 times with a SAW, I got to see it up close. He was no longer functional, but he was still alive, heart beating, breathing, responsive to pain stimulus. That was all opium doing the living. He didn't survive for very long, it took about 20 minutes for his opium fueled body to figure out it shouldn't still be kicking.

i would think the 556 round is a good round for combat.it might not DRT like the 7.62x51,but incapacitating your enemy is a good tactic.it slows down the others, being 4 or so have to carry the wounded

Therein lies one of the problems. All the wounded end up getting taken care of by us. insurgents, terrorists, tally whackers, freedom fighters, whatever any one wants to call them, they don't have hospitals, they're in a 3rd world country, and aren't part of a standing army with medics and trauma care.

That's a great idea in theory, and would probably be beneficial if we fight someone like china, but it just doesn't work like that in afghanistan or iraq.
