Stag and Rock River are also nice. I myself own a Windham and have never had any problems with it. But I don't torture them like in the military. Any of these listed will outlast you.

The basic Colts would probably be the best to hold their value.

I love my Bushmaster XM-15E2S. Paid $650 for it used. Has been a great gun. I'd recommended looking into that.

I like my Rock River Arms Entry Tactical LAR-15. It's got a Wylde chamber and a 16" moly chrome Wilson barrel. It eats everything I've fed it and I've yet to have a failure to feed except when I tried to use a full mag with a round already in the chamber (weird? but maybe coincidence? I normally load my 30 round mags with 28 ) It also came with a better trigger than the Colts in that price range come with.

For a little more than $1000 you can get a Colt LE6920. Same as an M4, but 16" instead of 14.5" and no giggle switch. It will hold it's value and is very rugged. Great starting place.

At our LGS, saw a DPMS basic AR for 599.99 last weekend, things are coming down, every AR15 they had was less than 1200.00 and some AR10's for higher.
