Default Best 250+ yard ar-15 deer hunting caliber

I love shooting my AR, and have hunted with it in the past with 223. Where I hunt now I have the opportunity to take longer shots but want something with the adequate knock down power to take a deer. I was leaning towards 6.5 Grendel. Is there something else I should be looking at?

Actually it is going to depend on the Upper you want to start with. Is this to be a 16" Barrel? If so there really isn't enough difference between the 6.5 Grendel and the 6.8 SPC worth talking about out to 300 yards. Either will work and work quite well.

Personally when I can afford it I am thinking really hard on a J&T Distributing 20" HBar 6.5 Grendel Upper Receiver Assembly.

If you want to keep it short a 16" 6.8 spc2 is a great round. It really shines with shorter barrels as it doesn't give up too much as your barrel gets shorter.

If you want to hunt at 250 yards, and maybe want to reach out to 600+ yards, and don't mind a longer barrel like 18 or 20" the 6.5 Grendel is a better choice.

The 6.8 doesn't really benefit from going over 16" on the Ar platform. The 6.5 doesn't so well with shorter than 16" barrels and gets better as barrel length increases. The are long distance target shooters going over 1000 yards with the Grendel as it can stay supersonic at over 1000 yards with the right barrel.

So, your choice, either will work well for your intended usage.

That is EXACTLY right. Perfect advice. If you're staying under 300 then ammo availability and price become your new deciding factors.

However its not the best but dont forget the 7.62X39 , cheap ,great round out to that distance and the 7.62 soft points and HPs do marvelous damage . Ballistically I believe the 6.8 spc and the 7.62X39 are pretty close . I know the 6.8 is a tad faster and slightly flatter .

The 6.8 and the 6.5 were designed to run in current AR platforms, so they are the rounds I would gravitate toward.

Too vague on information. Have you considered a AR-10 in 308?
