Assembling an AR-15 Flat Top Carbine

I'd like to put together my own civilian model M4. This is the starting point of my research and I am looking for some experienced opinions on which manufacturers I should be looking at for the individual parts and pieces of my rifle. I'd only like to spend between $800 and $1000 but I don't want that to limit your input nAlsp, is it true that .223 ammo is all but impossible to acquire? How much more money am I looking at spending in assembling my own rifle, rather than just buying a complete one? Thanks for your input!

Yes 5.56/.223 is scarce as hen's teeth.

You could easily spend $200 to $300 extra doing a complete assembly. But I assembled one anyway last summer, when you could still find parts. I probably ended about $650 on the upper I assembled. Now I can say I have done it.

So it's difficult to even find parts now? Which parts have you found most scarce? And which parts are still in good supply?

Bolt carrier groups and quality barrels are tough to find. I've seen lots of lower recievers in local stores but prices are still high on them. Id wait another month or two before buying stuff if you want to stay in budget.

At that price point check PSA often, they do have uppers and lowers briefly show up in stock. Like AT said, it can be hard to find a BCG though. Check BCM too and get on email notification lists.
