you can shoot .223 in a 5.56 AR but not the other way around. At least you can but it's not considered safe. The 5.56 Nato has a higher pressure than the .223 so any firearm in 5.56 will be made for that higher pressure. Here is a sight that describes it more for you. The Gun Zone -- SAAMI on 5.56 v. .223 Remington, hope this all helps.

Don't forget either that shooting at .223 in a 5.56 will be less accurate too!

They will shoot just fine. I have a 16" Rock River Elite CAR A-4 and it will shoot 1/2 MOA groups at 100 yards off the bag with Federal P223E. Which is a 223 round. You can shoot 223 in the 5.56 but as stated it is not recommended to shoot 5.56 in a 223 chamber since military ammunition is normally higher pressure than commercial ammo. Most all ARs today actually have a 5.56 chamber even though they have 223 on them also. Load her up and have fun!

My Stag shoots them both fine all day long. Can't tell any difference. Granted I do most of my shooting under 400yds.

If you zero the weapon every time you change ammo, you shouldn't notice a difference.
