Very good article! Well done!

Very good primer. ....I had the good fortune to win my first AR-15 in a drawing. I read your primer to help me understand the system. After cleaning and inspecting and lubing the first thing I have done is have iron sights mounted, the second was to shoot same, the third was to mount a red dot.
Need to sight it in, get some more quality mags and ammo.

I have chosen this forum to be my 'go-to' source of info as I have been looking at several and this one appears to have the widest range of intellect and experience. As noted in a post above I am a 75 y/o novice gun guy with some skills in fabrication and auto restoration, but minimal gun experience. I have several pistols and small rifles, but the growing concern for civil unrest and the challenge of building/assembling something myself has led me to undertake an AR15 project.

I have tried to gather a list of components based on what I have learned so far and am making this post to seek further advice. I am mostly interested in home defense, live on 13 acres in the county, but near several home subdivisions. I do not plan to bug out. Money is of some concern, but not the deciding factor. I do not need to be flashy or competitive. The 13 acres is fenced in and I occupy my house and shop about in the middle of the land, and I estimate the distance to either gate at about 80-100 yards.

To this point, I think I am looking for:

I am going to try and machine my own lower receiver. I am a machine designer and own a nice milling machine.

18" barrel,1:8, chambered to 5.56 x 45 NATO, CMV / chrome plated, hvy/med.

Hornady 75 match, Sierra 77 TMK rounds. I don't expect to shoot every week.

Full auto carrier bolt carrier group.

Iron sights

(good idea to buy a complete upper assembly? - whose?, where?)

Standard mil-spec trigger - single stage.

Bolt - I want to be sure to get a GOOD one. Recommendations ????

Rifle length DI gas system.

Cheap is not required, but value is!

Where is a good source for me to look at for acquiring the above?

Are there any suppliers that accept PayPal? I haven't seen any.
