I think the tape thing is finally dead, one last comment. We used OD duct tape to ID our weapons. You have to have some way to find it after getting out of the chow tent.
Ive found the easiest way to find your weapon is to never let it leave your side. We never let our weapon out of arms reach unless it was locked up in the vault. Sounds like I got stuck w/ a bunch of anal SOBs

One of the biggest article 15 issues/UIF for AF in theater was for weapons violations. Part of the problem on joint bases was the failure of the commanders to agree on policy. Albeit a pain, keeping it in arms reach was probably the safe bet.

I never felt keeping my weapon on my person was a pain. Life in the FOB made you want your weapon by your side. We never had policy issues. Command Sgt. Major Watson told us what he wanted and we did it, like it or not. We were lucky and had one of the toughest SOBs for a CSM. He was a Ranger during the Somalia conflict and was immortalized in the book Black Hawk Down as being part of the Mogadishu Mile. He wasn't a big man but I believe he was made of steel, lol.
