AR Build
I'm thinking of building a new AR in a larger caliber other than my 5.56 Smith & Wesson Sport. Any good lowers that can accept a .308 and up? And what about uppers? This is going to be my new hog rifle

Caliber wise you can go with the 6.8spc, .308, or the .50 beowulf. Not sure of the price difference

I read in that other thread about the .458 caliber makes a good hog rifle because of it's ballistics at close ranges like 100 yards or something

I know a guy who has a Beowulf and its one bad gun but he only has 1 round for it and he's been on back order for some for a long time. I do like the .308, that's what my 700 is in. The 6.8 also seems to be fairly good, haven't heard much on it though

.308 or any round with an OAL beyond 45mm or so requires an AR-10 lower receiver. This limits your options to either DPMS or Armalite standards as their is no true Mil Spec for the AR 10 platform. .458 SOCOM, .50 Baewolf and 6.8 spc all fit AR 15 lowers due to shorter cartridge length.
Pricewise add about 30% to the price of the build and forget about interchanging between parts and/or AR 15 uppers.

Well if the .50 and 6.8 fit into an AR-15 lower, I'm set on one of those then, I'd just have to get an upper

Yep...upper, mags, although I believe the .458 fits a standard AR mag, and possibly an upgrade to a heavier buffer spring. Both rounds will pound the pizz out of a standard AR buffer and spring which could effect bolt cycle timing.

I know I said larger caliber but I was also checking out a 5.7 upper I ran across a week or two ago. Any input on that?

From what I've heard the 5.7 has about the same ballistics of a .22 Mag. Maybe someone can clarify that.
If I was to get an upper in a different caliber with the purpose of hunting, it would probably be a 6.8. I live in Florida and all the wildlife here is relatively small. A 200 lb buck is huge down here, so I have no need for anything as big as a .458.

Yeah the deer here in Oklahoma aren't too massive, but our hogs can get up too size. (approx 800lb for a few, normally 3-400)
