You could probably even build the lower cheaper if you shopped carefully. I believe DSA sells stripped lowers for $60. You can get an LPK for about $55. And you should be able to do a complete stock kit for under $100.

Good post slo.:)

I was floored to look at the date and realize these deals still exist. I am looking for an inexpensive AR in .223. I have heard much ballyhoo about building instead of buying complete. I have no skills yet in gunsmithing, though I am really quite handy around the house. I'm sure I could figure it out. And the doing would teach me how the parts all work.

Questions:

-What tools would be needed to put together the 5 or 6 parts listed in the original post? Exactly. Perhaps with MidwayUSA links, if possible.

-Would the complete lower (for just, like $75 more) be worth it over a stripped lower and a parts kit...for someone who values his time a bit more than money when we're talking less than 100 bucks?

-Do I look up an FFL in the yellow pages, tell him what I want, and he orders the lower? How does that work? Do I go to my local gun shop with whom I have a relationship? I'm in Portland, Oregon.

A good set of punches, a small hammer, and maybe a set of needlenose pliers.

My first lower took me about an hour, the second took my less than half an hour. So it's your choice, but I think the knowledge gained by doing it yourself is worth it.

Your regular shop should be able to get you a lower, but if they aren't willing, you might try the FFL locator on GunBroker.com.
