Back to the OP, I think what MJ's getting frustrated at is that so many people are overempasizing accuracy in an AR.

Its a strong point to be sure, and very easily quantifiable. I think that's one of the reasons why everybody brags about them.

When a guy says " I just shot 1500 rounds or wolf out my ar with no FTF or FTE!" just doesn't have the same cachet as "I just got a .536" group at 100 yards!"

Of course the guy with tight groups is shooting from a vise, with a shooting jacket on, 6-24 power scope, 0.4 oz trigger and single loading 80gr vlds. Ask him to walk a line and while shooting from the low ready position every 5 yards or so, he can't hit a ispc torso target at 25 yards, and takes 30 seconds to FIND and change a mag.

Guess some people just have different requirements and needs from their ARs.

But seriously....everyone should take a carbine class....or 3. At least once. They will learn A LOT, and rethink A LOT of their gear.

This thread is why I run 2 very different uppers on the same lower.

I do enjoy bench shooting. Methodicly working to shrink groups at 300 yards is how I relax, however, 6 years of infantry service made it obvious to me that a 22" barreled AR with a fixed 10 power scope IS NOT the tool for clearing my house or day to day carry should the SHTF.

For this reason, upper #2 is a 16" LMT w/EOTECH. It's point of bad guy accurate to 250 or so and very quick handling.

I think the AR has evolved past it's traditional role and equipped properly, can quickly be changed from a CQB/mid range platform to a designated marksman role.

Tack

BenLuby Guess you do know that some of whats suppose to be civilan mil-spec rifle may not feed cheap ole .223 well. So be sure for that day you have a lighter weight buffer with it for the under quality cheap ammo. I do want a very accurate rifle too. But that minte of BG better be at some darn long ranges or i could have had a ak many years ago. HA
It most certainly does have a soul and it most certainly is just a tool.

I think your missing the point. There are things that make an AR inherently more reliable out of the gate. From there the individual must put that particular AR through it's passes.
