Which AR????

As a noobie to this Forum (hey folks) I'm sure this question has been beaten to a pulp but what the heck..

I'm interested in an AR style rifle but at stunned of the number of manufacturers. How does a guy know which way to lean? Colt, S&W, Armalite and so on and so on. Independent reviews seen nonexistant.

I'm looking for a.223/5.56 with reliability, reasonable cost and accuracy and a good platform for adding accessories AND it can't break the bank. Base unit at $1000.00 would be A Good jumping off point.

I live in MA so you gotta bear with me a bit.:o but any imput would be greatly appreciated. TY

Throw an intro in for us.

Can you own ARs in Mass? Thought they were banned up there.

If you can legally own one, for a grand I would go for a Colt. You could build one cheaper, but 6920s are running around 1000 if you look and you cant beat the reliability on the Pony guns. BCM is another good choice

Depends on what you want though, and what is legal where you live.

CMMG offers some bargin AR's for around $600. Colt, Armalite, RRA, DMPS, and many others are all good quality AR's. For $1000 I am sure you could build a very nice rifle and config it exactly how you want it to be from the get go.

I am sure that JD and a few others will be along shortly to give you even more insight into building and/or buying.

Rock River Arms has a hell of a deal going on right now until April 15th. I would recommend any of their 3 Operator series, especially for a starter rifle. All of them are around or under 1G.

Now MO, where's our introduction?

If I didn't already have one, I'd be all over the Rock River deal. Great price and some cool little extras thrown in....things you'd probably end up buying anyway!

Thanks for the imput guys!! Even here in Taxachusetts I can own an AR or similar rifle. The limits are on the size of the Mag with 10 rounds being the max not that I couldn't scrounge up any sort of mag if I was so inclined.

Just a brief look into the AR world is a task!! At least with my hunting rifles the biggest worry is how much I want to spend on a piece of glass to top it.

I don't think I want a carry handle but I do want a collapsable stock but it looks like thats only the beginning..Can you buy them stock with shoot thru iron sights topped with glass?

Problem is there is just no place to pick them up to fondle before you buy and I want to try to buy online and have shipped to an FFL holder.

I do have the money tucked away so it's a done deal. I just tell the wife I traded a couple of shotguns or something cause she thinks all firearms look alike God bless her.

Most ARs come with no rear sight, you'd have to pick the one you want and screw it on to the flattop, no big deal. Same for the scope, you'll need to buy it separately and get the correct mount/rings to accomodate it. Researching and choosing the glass is almost as much fun as picking the rifle!

I would recommend SWFA, they'll get you what you want fast, and they're good people to deal with:

Quality optics and accessories from Leupold, Bushnell, Burris, Nikon and more!

or this for "pre-owned" or reconditioned optics:
