Default AR 15 and Thordsen custom stock "NY" question

Just got my first AR 15 yesterday (Stag Arms model 3) and it has one of those funky NY legal stocks from thordsen customs on it. Now my question is about a bracket on the back of the stock, it has 3 screws in it and when you remove it there's just a steel cylinder in it. Is just a counter weight of some sort? I can't seem to figure it. ImageUploadedByFirearms Talk1404059590.024607.jpg

Probably a strengthening bracket due to the offset of stock and narrow neck for the handhold.
