I've had my look at the MK 12 and it's certainly a top tier AR from what I've read. Though would I be missing out on anything if I went with a Daniel Defense V-series of rifle just to save a little money? Most are 16" in barrel length compared to the Mk's 18". A 2" difference can't make too much of a loss.

Edit: Colt Combat Unit Carbine is also on the table. It a fair bit cheaper than Daniel Defense. Don't know if its a fair comparison.

Well, nothing for nothing, but the older Mini-14's with the longer barrels were notorious for being less than accurate. It was found that their barrel harmonics was affecting the accuracy. When Ruger shortened the barrel to 16", accuracy really improved. My 581 tactical has no problem putting 20 rounds into a 4" circle, shooting offhand, slow fire. I did change over to a Tech sight peep and use a strut. (100yds)

I hope that doesn't reign true today. The ranch Mini 14 barrels are 18" and heavier (minus the 5820 model). Maybe I'm wrong but that should make hem more accurate, no?

You cant go wrong with a Daniels Defense. I agree with the PSA sugestion that has already been mentioned and would add Aeroprecision as an option....mine has been excellent.

The thing about the looks of an AR is that if you don't like it, it's not terribly hard to make it your own, via Ceracote, paint, and any number of furniture options. While eliminating the basic structure of an AR is difficult, making it your own is simply a matter of putting forth the effort and cash.
If the Mini 14 doesn't float your boat and the ARs just don't do it for you, there is always the option of going for the deeper pocket option of an FN SCAR 16. I know if I had deep enough pockets, I'd have one.

After the Ruger and AR, my next choice would be a Galil.
