I see a lot of suggestions for different types of lube. The one that intrigues me the most and I will probably go with unless someone can tell me why not, is wheel bearing grease. Comes in a giant tub for $5 and looks like I will never run out.

Any arguments for or against this?

I know a couple of LEO that run it in there rifles and swear by it.. i on the other hand would not, and have read also to never use any grease in an ar rifle..( The AR maint and mod book by Patric Sweeney) The grease is a good lube but it also suspends dirt and grime in it.. I use a teflon lube from ford which is a very light grease with excellent lube properties seems to withstand heat very well. I also put a little gun oil on top of it when assembling.
I see some on here also use Mobile one and I might try that next to see how it holds up.
I have also noticed in the last few guns I got there was a flyer for a new teflon gun lube which seems to be the same as the Ford ptfe lube..

Seeing how I'm not French, I don't plan on dropping my rifle in dirt.

Dan, I am planning on doing a test of lubes against saltwater like I did with the knives where Fluid Film shocked the world.

The knives have officially been under for 60 days plus, which I think is plenty of time for that test.

I'll start this weekend if I can pull off a day to myself.

Ya I would hope no one would toss it in the dirt but s**t happens.. I do alot of shooting in sand pits ect so there is always dirt around..

Then don't shoot it either

The AR's direct impingement system blows hot gases and fouling down through the bolt carrier and into the receiver when firing. Some lubes will burn off or catch and hold that fouling on the moving parts and bearing surfaces.

Slip 2000 is the shizzle. And their carbon removed works like the Hand of God.

And I've used Mobil 1 full synthetic for years with 100% satisfaction.

Grease is great for Garands, M14s, M1 Carbines, and 1911s, but not for ARs.
