ar 15 to loud for area?

how loud is an ar 15?
louder than a shotgun?
.223....
im saying this because im worryed that it will be so loud that it gun puts the fun to the stop.
i shot at a farm safley, into a big dirt mound.
the area where i live your only subsposed to shoot muzzleloaders and shotguns and bows, .22 no hi power rifles

i would love to hear your thoughts thanks

Fairly loud as is any centerfire but not as loud as a 12 gauge. I'd use ear protection and have fun. Be safe though.

I would say that it is louder then a 12 gauge. I can stand shooting my shotgun without ear protection. The AR, i shot 4 rounds and my ears rang for 2 hours.

Today you can get an AR in many calibers other than the .223 or the 5.56.
A lot of cal.s are quieter than others.

what would be the best caliper for me?
not .22 lol

Id follow Quentins advise. Always wear ear protection. Hearing doesnt regenerate. Huh! What did you say!?

5.56 would be your best choice if youre not wanting .22. You could spend a little extra and buy a conversion kit. I believe theyre around $200.

5.56 has a nice supersonic CRACK to the sound. Quite different from a
shotgun or muzzleloader. People will notice.

You can get a AR that fires a subsonic round---9mm, 40 or 45, 300 whisper
would all be quieter than 5.56.

OR--you could try an external sound dampening device. Stack of old tires,
box with baffles in it, shoot from inside a building through a open door,
lots of ways to muffle the sound a bit. As long as the device is not attached
to the gun it should be OK--but check local laws to be sure.

If you're a handloader, I'd recommend this caliper.

i find the AR in 5.56/.223 to be pretty quiet for a hi-power rifle. pretty much any centerfire qualifies as high power. if you have restrictions in your area you shouldnt shoot it without a conversion to .22LR if your restricted to such.
