AR-10 vs AR-15

So I have caught the bug. In the last 6 months I have acquired AR-15, Mini-14, SKS, and AK.
I am looking to start a build, well sort of, I am going to piece one together.
I love my AR but would like one with a little more knock down power and also like the price of the 7.62. What parts will I need different besides the obvious barrel?

I still want one of these, 7.62x39.

Upper receiver, lower receiver, bolt, bolt carrier, buffer tube, buffer spring, buffer, lower parts kit, magazines. That covers the major differences. It's a different gun. Nothing is interchangeable that I am aware of.

90% of the parts are going to be different.

Find yourself a receiver in stock somewhere, then plan your build around it.......

Gas blocks, triggers, forward assist, for the most part are the same.

I think the receiver extensions, castle nuts and end plates are interchangeable too, for some styles at least.

You say you like the price of 7.62. Are you talking about 7.62x39 which can be built on an AR 15 or are you talking about 7.62 NATO (7.62x51, or .308 Winchester), which would require using AR 10 sized receivers?

Two pretty different animals when it comes to parts compatibility and cost of parts and ammo.

Very good point.......I mean even milsurp 308 prices have gone up...but the title of the thread is ar10 vs ar15, so I assumed the op was refering to the 308 winchester platform.

I personally like choice, and I've been looking hard at the MEGA Maten platform.

7.62x51, as opposed to other 30 caliber loads.

Ok then you would need to decide on what type if .308 AR type you want to go with. There are the Armalite types of receivers that have an angle cut upper and lower and a DPMS type that have rounded mating surfaces. The Modern Armalite type uses modified m14 mags, the DPMS type uses original Armalite type mags or MagPul or DPMS mags. Or there is the LaRue that uses Armalite type uppers, but DPMS and original Armalite and MagPul mags. RRA makes a version, closed to the DPMS type, but it uses FNFAL mags.

So, things on a .308 AR are not as widely compatible. Also they tend to be pricier than AR15 parts by a pretty significant margin. So do your research on parts comparability with whatever your chosen pattern is before you order the parts.

What is it you like about the price of .7.62x51? Or where are you finding good prices on it. Most I've seen has been around $20 per 20 rounds.

I also saw that he has other guns chambered in 7.62x39 so that was another reason for my question. I can get 7.62x39 in the local stores at as low as $5.50 per box. .308/7.62x51 on the other hand is running around $15-18 for cheap stuff and not easy to find at those prices, while premium stuff is available at over $20 per box.
