I was a huge AK fan back in the day of $100 kits and building to your own. Now a days a basic AK build is as pricey as a budget AR. They are two completely different beasts.
If u have to buy one, get an AR. Otherwise buy one of each. Learn what u like and dislike and then build your own to meet your likes.

Man I wish it was that easy today for only 100$ for an Ak I would get 2 or 3 haha but I'm thinking about picking up a WASR 10 and giving it a good over look , and what are some of the common problems with the WASR 10's?

I don't know how it is where you're at, but i can still find used WASR 10s at flea markets starting at $250. The most common problems are loose furniture, sloppily fitting mags, and crooked front sights.

a lot of folks look for something for shtf times. my choice is the ar15. ammunition and mags are lighter. they are both pretty much identical in terminal effect in a shtf type environment.
less weight less space on the ammo means you can carry more food water medicines or other items.
reliability i give the edge to the ar15 IF you get one made to higher standards than your typical 600$ ar15. easier to mount optics or other addons to an AR15.
ar15 controls have better ergonomics.
anyways others have different opinions. but i trust the ar15 more than an ak47.

I do see where your coming from on the lighter ammo and mags but I don't trust the Ar-15 from what happened to my sister husband in Pakistan and was helping a new squad of the Pakistan soldiers and he had his Ar-15 with him and they were attacked he always always always kept it in tip top cleaning shape on the base which the had left only hours ago and when is Ar-15 failed to fire he did an emergency reload and his gun was not even performing a dry fire on the chambered round when he pulled the trigger nothing happened but he did manage to survive with one of the fallen soldiers Ak-47 but I do think I am going to get an Ak-47 or 74

I just recently purchased a wasr.. I'm not gonna lie i loved the quality of it. If you know what to look for, you will end up with a good quality rifle. And even if somethig gets past you. It's usually something really easy to fix.
The things to look for are...
.Canted sights
.mag wobble
.canted gasblock
. In some instances the big will hang up on the hammer. Can be fixed with a dermal.(just make sure it's too bad the it interferes with cycling of rounds)
.g2 trigger by tapco(great trigger eliminates trigger slap)
.and last but not least. Loose or too right rivets.
