A1 iron sights...
Hello all...I'm assembling a lightweight carbine using an "enhanced" A1 upper receiver. Upon receipt it wasn't long before I noticed the rear sight aperature is not very large on either one. Like the A2 you have a rather large opening for short range work and a smaller one for reaching out there some. I can't remember if the originals were that way. I found an on-line copy of the old TM-manual and have posted the corresponding pages. At the risk of sounding like a babbling old appears that is the case :) Though I see that a larger option was offered. I understand the A2 aperature will fit...can anybody confirm this? I guess whipper snappers need not apply...:p

One other thing...I prepped the barrel for torquing and I placed the crush washer and A2 type flash hider on the muzzle finger tight. It's butted up and will require about 3/4 turn to time correctly. Does the crush washer allow that much..."crushing?"

Yes the rear apertures will interchange.
Do you have a "crush" washer, or a "peel" washer for the flash suppressor?
I've never used a crush type personally, but from the looks of it they seem to be thick enough to handle the job.

It came with the crush washer. The solid bottom of the A2 type flash hider hand tightens to 4:00 which will require a more than a 360 degree turn to time correctly. I watched the Brownell's tutorial that stated not to tighten more then 430-ish degree if I it should tighten but seems a long ways to go. I also found the handguard cap is not aligned corrctly and apparently too tight turn by hand to lign up with the gas tube opening...I may be returning this for an exchange.

I happen to have a brand new original A-1 low light rear sight that I could be talked out of, if you want the gun to be true to original.

We can make a trade...PM if interested.

I watched the video you referred to and the actual specification given was a minimum of 90 and a maximum of 460 from hand tight.
Since you are at 4:00 you will need to turn your flash hider 420 in order to line it up properly, which is still within the required specs.

As far as the hand guard cap is concerned, that simply slips over the barrel and is not directly attached - although it is probability pinched between the stop shoulder on the barrel and the front sight base. You could try turning it with a rubber strap wrench that can be found at the local hardware store. I don't believe it would take all that much force to turn it, but it's your decision if you want try that or return the barrel / upper assembly.

Best of luck with your project. :)

Robo: Are you in need of an A2 aperture?

hillmillenia 02-11-2010 08:58 PM

Thanks guys...Robo I would be interested...I'll get you a list of stuff I have the top of my head I have 20 new or like-new HK G3 mags with some pouches laying around (if anybody is interested) and no far as the handguard cap...yeah I can probably get it to turn...I have a strap wrench, I haven't actually assembled a barrel to a receiver in about 20 years...used to build many years ago and more recently I just bought 'em assembled with the's like all those phone numbers in my cell phone. The last time I washed it I was pretty much SOL...note to self, check pockets before washing...

Update...OK the upper is I'm starting to consider the model 653. I could get a NoDak A1 black lower and Essential Arms has the Aluminum vinyl coated tele-stock assy. Short of a few parts like the mag catch I can get pretty close to original reproduction  Here we go, like I need this.
