7.62x39 upper in 20"?
I didn't see any other threads for this, so I thought I'd post one. Does anyone know who, if any, makes a 7.62x39 upper assembly with a 20" barrel? I have been doing some searches and I can't seem to find any info out there. And, if I choose to build an upper, can I use a standard AR-15 upper, and just get the 7.62x39 BCG, barrel, and magazine, or is there a specific 7.62 upper that I need to get? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure about a 20" barrel, but a standard upper works. Different bolt and mags are what you need. The mag is the weak link on a 7.62x39 AR. The round really needs a curved mag to feed well. The AR mag well is straight at the top and most folks experience feed problems. RRA introduced a different lower that uses actual AK type mags to alleviate this problem, but then that lower doesn't work with all the other calibers a standard AR would have as options because it won't take any if the AR mags.
Not to burst your bubble or discourage you, just letting you know that there may be some frustration ahead of you in this build.

It seems that this one is debatable. On a lot of other forums its about a 1:1 ration of people who say it doesn't work to those who say theirs works great with out any hiccups. I'm convinced enough by those who enjoy their set-ups that I'm going to give it a shot. From what I've been reading it sounds like the key is to make sure you get the right brand of
mag.

Thanks for the help guys. I have yet to find a longer barrel, but I have come across the curved mags. BCG completes and parts seem easy enough to come by, but the barrels are another story. I don't even think I've found any in 18". When I get some extra time I'll update with links to the parts that I've found so far.

Oh, and once you buy it, don't tell anyone. The 7.62x39 AR is the best kept secret around. Cheap ammo, more power than 5.56, and the list goes on. Since it isn't a traditional AR, it get bashed quite a bit by fanboys.

If 7.62mm is what you are looking for take a look at .300 Blackout...it's a 7.62 x 35 round currently in use by the military and all standard AR mags and BCGs can be used...only change needed is barrel. It's a walloping 125gr round with full load 2200+ fps velocity and subsonic variant. Not as cheap as 7.62 x 39 but not too unreasonable at about $12 for 20 rounds...not sure what bulk pricing is at the moment.
