Well Remington sorta dropped the ball when the army said nay. Still some support out there but it requires a lot of proprietary items( mags, bolt etc) whereas 300blk uses same everything, except for barrel and possibly gas block, depending on your configuration. However this is all information I've gleaned from my slow process of looking into my second AR.

Well I have a Patriot Ordnance Factory upper in the 6.8 spc

1989,

It is a very good round and ballistically slightly superior to the 5.56/223. And if you have an existing AR-15 With standard Take Down and Pivot Pins you can get a complete 6.8 Upper with 6.8 Bolt and a 6.8 Magazine and now you have a 6.8.
Obviously if you get a complete 6.8 AR you can also have a 5.56/ 223 by simply getting a complete 5.56 Upper with 5.56/223 Bolt and a standard 5.56/223 Mag and once again you have a two rifle combination.
The only negative to the 6.8 is the excessive availability of surplus ammunition is not available. And the cost of the retail ammunition is higher vs. the 5.56/223 Ammunition.
But it is a good round. We have made several one shot kills with it out to 150 yards on Deer as well.

One thing I can say you can use a 7.62x39 ar15 magazine with a 6.8 round

Ballistically speaking, the 6.8 SPC falls midway between the 5.56 and the .308.

It makes an excellent mid-range (350 yards +/-) hunting round for medium sized game. Many states don't permit the .223/5.56 for hunting deer, for instance.

Although inexpensive plinking ammo isn't available, quality hunting rounds are no more expensive than that for any other caliber at about $1/round. Look for the price of 6.8 SPC ammo to come down as more manufacturers ramp up their production in 6.8.
