Default 5.56 - .22LR upper swap?

I'm still learning about AR's and I was wondering when I get one (a 5.56), can I swap out the upper to a .22LR upper from the 5.56 and will it work? Would I need to change/swap anything else out besides the upper?

A standard lower can have a .22 upper added- will need a different magazine. MOST 22 LR lowers cannot have a 5.56 upper. There is a size difference (width) and .22 LR has no buffer, different bolt setup, etc.

Some .22 upper manufacturers (CMMG, Spikes) recommend a rounded hammer vs a notched one. That swap shouldn't effect 5.56 functioning.

You can get one of the drop-in kits.

Be aware shooting lead .22 fouling will clog the gas tube.
