5.45x39 Build?

I've been thinking about a 5.45x39 build due to the price difference in ammo. I know the surplus stuff is corrosive, but I'm not afraid to use it. I've cleaned many of old Mausers after shooting the corrosive 8mm stuff.

I already have a spare lower and upper available. I've priced it out and for about $750, I can have a badass rifle. I've videos to modify Pmags to hold 28 rounds of the 5.45x39 and that still work for the 5.56 so I can use my regular mags.

And with spam cans of 5.45x39 selling for $170/1080 rnds, it's hard to argue the cost savings. What I'd really like to do is have about 2 spam cans of surplus handy at all times. Then I'd have the 5.45x39 as a SHTF gun. Just keep it in a carry case full of mags and ready to roll if needed.

Anyone else do a 5.45x39 build? Am I crazy? Should I just spend the $750 on more 223 ammo?

A 5.45mm build is a fantastic route to go IMO if you have a range nearby that will let you shoot it.
Recommend a Melonited or similar barrel as those treatments all on the outside of the barrell too and not just inside like chrome lining.

Great way to afford plenty of training too!

I have plenty of places to shoot one.

Then there is no reason to stick to 5.56mm
The performance of the 5.45 mm surplus is quite good and the extra cleaning needed for the corrosive surplus ammo can be mitigated by the choice of a Melonited or other nitrited barrel

PS: Hulda and Adams arms have wonderful piston uppers for this caliber.
Since the surplus round are not only corrosive but pretty dirty a piston arrangements makes a lot of sense

I'd like to build one as well.

I wonder if there are any feeding issues.

Not with the right upper.
Costs for the 5.45mm round are still between 15 and 19 cents and often they get delivered in spam cans perfect for decades long storage...

There are ways to convert USGI mags but the most reliable magazine solutions are purpose built 5.45mm mags.

This was going to be my strategy to stack ammo deep but i could never find a local range that would let me shoot so:( I sold my adams arms upper a couple of cases of Ammo and eight 5.45mm mags.

I've seen some YouTube videos of people modifying the front of the follower on standard Pmags that will allow them to hold 28 rounds of the 5.45.

I've also been thinking about stocking up on the 5.45 spam cans, buying one or two as money allows. Just to have a supply if needed. Maybe I'm being too paranoid though.

I just bought two spam cans of 5.45x39 and I don't even have a gun yet. Was that dumb?

Here's my newest predicament: I can build a pretty badass full rifle for $850 or I can build a dedicated upper and just use my current AR lower for $650. Should I just spend $200 more and get a full rifle or save the $200 and just switch out uppers all the time?

I'm building just an upper at the moment and will switch out with my other lower, until I get around to building another lower.
