I am trying to start reloading so I might give in to the 6.5. Just a few more questions. At what rai he will it still be affective on deer. What would be the best upper to go with at a reasonable price. And I'm sure I will have to by new mags.

If you go with the Grendel, you have some options.

First off, you don't need to buy a new gun, just an upper. Two pins and you are in business with a brand new round, greater range and more firepower.

Here are some links to look at if you are entertaining a Grendel:

http://sskindustries.com/6-5-grendel

http://www.prexis.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=P&Product_Code =AR65&Category_Code=AR15UP

And there are more out there if you want to pursue this line. I ALMOST built one of these myself before the last election.

600 yds is in the effective range of a .308 or your .30-06. 1000 yards would be closer to the "moon shot" range for those rounds.

6.5 Grendel is a promising round. I'd like to see it get more traction as a common round with more manufacturers making ammo for it.

The whole point of me getting the new upper was to have a more accurate and harder hitting round at longer distance without having to carry an extra gun. But hey it's not all about getting ready for the next D-day. I am using it as an excuse to add to my collection. Also if shtf that would be another person I could arm.

No, the colt is a complete rifle. 308 upper AND lower

It can be converted to accept a standard 5.56 upper by changing the upper and adding a magazine well adapter.

In essence, you get a lower reciever that can shoot everything an ar10 and ar15 can.

The only thing i'm unsure of is if your want a large caliber converision, I think you need a special colt only upper reciever. Not sure tho. So if you want a caliber like a large caliber 6.5 creedmor you MAY have to source a proprietary colt upper to build.

for the price tho, you can get a complete ar10 and a ar15 and instead of one lower and two uppers. BUT if you want just one lower, and like 3+ uppers then you start saving money.

Personally, I think its best to have 2 or 3 lowers, like a ar15 standard, ar15 precision (rifle extension, precision trigger) and then a big boy ar10 lower, then have as many uppers in calibers you want. To each his own tho.

30-06 will reach out a bit further than 308, it can use heavier bullets in 180-220 grain much more effectively than 308. carlos hathcock used a winchester model 70 in 30-06 for most of his sniping in vietnam. if you dont know who that is read his biography very interesting individual.
