300 Blackout Upper

Well if y'all have seen recently, I just finished, halfway at least, my lower build (I just need a stock and buffer which I'm ordering later tonight when I get paid) and I have finally decided on my upper caliber being a 300blk due to the fact I have an @ss load of .223 casings and .30 caliber bullets from .308 reloading. My only question is which brand? I want a 16" barrel, preferable without the A2 sight but I am not opposed to it being on there if the price is right. I have looked around and have seen them all ranging from 400 or so to 1100 for just an upper. Some of the cheaper ones were from J&T Distributing, Model 1, and Marks Armory. I have also seen a bunch of CMMG's but they are out of stock in all the places I have looked. What do you guys recommend?

I saw that PSA had their 16" 300 blk uppers back in stock, might want to give them a look. Good luck

Remember to balance.
16 inch barrel - carbine gas - carbine buffer.
One of the shorter barrels - pistol length gas - pistol buffer.

If you are going to suppress, that too will come into play. The 'subs' need lots of gas and sometimes the gas port has to be opened up.

I don't do 'SBR' or 'suppressed' (I don't even waste my time with heavy quieter loads, the 300 is less noise in super-sonic loads, my daughters opinion) and these are the high point capabilities of the 300 AAC Blackout. Guess I missed the boat :)

Cutting down .223/5.56 brass is simple and easy.

Your bullet choice reportedly can be a problem. I've never had any problems but I stick with what is proven. I run 110g V-Max, 148g GI FMJ pulls and 150g JSP Corebonded (cheap and not cheap). I do have and tried some of those OTM bullets, $ with little use for me. The standing view is for longer bullets, not short stubby round nose. I've never tried any, so I don't know.

Powder selections are plentiful. Mostly any large bore mag pistol powder works. Some faster rifle powders are used and some pistol powder for sub-sonics. I use H110/296, Lt'Gun and some old Olin 630. The 630 runs better with heavier, 147/150grain, bullets. The H110/296 with the 110grain and Lt'Gun does well with all. This is all just my opinions, so try what you have and make your determinations.

Now to your question: everything looks to be in short supply. Check lots of suppliers and makers. See what and when 'it' is available. I bought a DSA 16in SS upper and am very happy with it. It took forever to get! PSA has had a good turn-a-round for me in the past (not for a 300 BlackOut barrel/upper but for .223/.223W/556 uppers). Look around and see. Be safe.

Awesome info, great to know! What about barrel twist rates? I am kinda stuck with a 16 inch since I cant do the SBR and run suppressed like I'd like to since I'm not 21... stupid laws.. anyways, the most common I've seen are 1x7 and 1x8. I plan to run no heavier than 168 grain bullets and will probably stick to 150 range

Sweet! I will definitely be keeping you in mind since the AAC and CMMG are more in my price range!

5% off isn't much, but it will help some. Check my sig line for the coupon code.

The 1 in 7 and 1 in 8 twist will handle most everything. The mag well limits bullets weighting more than 240/260 grains or so. I don't do cast bullets, this is just what I remember seeing here and there.

I will not comment on stupid laws.....

So either twist will be fine? I may make a load of 220 grain subsonic just to see how they are in accuracy as well. Most of the CMMG's I've found were 1x8 and the AAC were 1x7. Would the 1x8 be okay with the 220's out to about 300 yards? That's my max range where I usually hog hunt (the main purpose of this rifle besides the caliber intriguing me). Most of my shots are going to be inside 150 though. I can comprehend the twist rates for .223/5.56 just fine but this is all new territory for me.
