Default .223 or 5.56?

I have read some posts about being able to fire both in one configuration but not the other. My Bushmaster lower and upper are both stamped 5.56, so can I fire both 223 and 5.56 through it and is one better than the other?

Welcome to the Forum -

A 5.56mm Chamber can safely fire both the military 5.56mm and the civilian .223

Your rifle will feature better accuracy with the 5.56 since that is what the chamber was specifically cut for.

In a civilian .223 chamber, the 5.56mm NATO CAN cause higher than average chamber pressures and COULD cause a problem.

In that .223 chamber the civilian .223 round will be much more accurate than the 5.56mm would be in the same chamber.

What twist rate is your barrel??

And now that I have answered your question: Where's my Range Report???

JD

The barrel is a 1 in 9 twist. I plan on using 55gr ammo, the range report will follow after this weekend. Thanks.

Should be perfect. 1:9 twist is about idle for that grain bullet.

Good luck and hopefully the wind and rain Gods are with you.
